How to Start a Raw Diet

2971871727_dd46cbefaf_b

Detox is the most important phase in beginning your raw food lifestyle.

Your body is full of toxins that need to be cleared out. These toxins get into your body by the foods we eat, our polluted environment and the water we drink. In fact all cooked food leaves behind and creates a toxic environment.

Once you cleanse this environment with a series of colonics or a trusted herbal laxative you will find your raw food journey much easier to stick with.

One great benefit is that because you’re clean on the inside you stop craving cooked food. So you have a greater change of not only sticking to your raw food lifestyle but enjoying it and not feeling deprived.

Here are some excellent resources to help you choose the right cleanse to begin your raw food lifestyle with. Remember that you can use any cleanse that works for you.

If you are new to cleansing you can try

Senna Leaf Tea three nights in a row. *Note* it does cramp your stomach. I have a little trick for that though. Add one peppermint leaf teabag to it and no cramps.

Recently I tried Super Clense and it worked without cramping my stomach. I highly recommend it.

One famous cleanse that you can try is Dr Gunger's Clean Program Clense. I never tried it personally however many people seem to be getting outstanding results with it.

Here are some books on cleansing and beginner raw food recipes to get you off to a great start.

Preview of my Beginner Caribbean and American Raw Food Book :: How To Enjoy Heaven on Earth Like You Mean it

  Cover4rb

How To Enjoy Heaven on Earth Like You Mean it is here to show you that starting a raw food diet doesn't have to be hard or boring.

I wrote this book to connect to a past I never want to forget. You see I'm from Barbados and I grew up in a small chattel home. I took  showers under the star lit sky meaning we had no indoor shower or bathroom. However just like Adam and Eve never felt their nakedness because God's glory was surrounding them, we never felt like we were lacking anything. I attribute that to the fact that there was so much love surrounding us the material things didn't matter.

There was always something growing on those old fruit trees weather it was mango, sour sop or guava. Soursop harvest meant that we would have sour sop punch and sour sop ice cream to contend with for weeks.

Everything was so simple and true. We spoke how we felt,we sung songs like show me ya motion fa la la la la and the melody was soaked in love. We were so full of love that we put it into everything we did. This included planting and gardening,it's probably why our food tasted so good.

Imagine heading to the beach and being able to snack on freshly picked sugar cane and wild almonds, that was a completely priceless experience.

So I wrote this book not only for those who know exactly what i'm talking about, but for those who need a new culinary experience.

NYC Green Carts

Cart_600 NYC Green Cart New York Times Article

Don't you just loose your green mindset when you're walking down a city street in my case New York City and on every corner there is a Mc Donald’s, Burger King Or Pizza Hut ?

Sometimes I really have to muster all of my "health reasoning" to not run in one of these places and grab me a cheesy slice.

Anyone who knows me understands my cheese addition. I completely blame it on my dad who use to make me huge sandwiches made with our national Bajan cheese when I was a child.

Warning to all who read this please steer clear from bajan ancor cheese. You will crave it all throughout your life.

That being said the unhealthy food choices are endless, from all kinds of mystery meat on a stick to desserts made with 15 sticks of butter. Sometimes I feel like I’m a target to all advertisers seeking to kill me dead with all their cheap offerings.

It was such a pleasure to read that people who care are doing something about it. With the Introduction of NYC Green Carts, these are fruit and vegetable carts that can be found throughout the city.

The New York health Department are sponsoring them and proving them to small business owners. I feel like it's a win win deal. If I can grab a mango on a stick instead of a who knows what’s going on in here cheese pizza I might not loose my healthy mindset and neither might you.

Raw Vegan : Frozen Tangerine Ice in Lemon Cups

BOOK 435

What do you do if you're a raw vegan and determined to stick to your diet? You keep it super simple for starters.

Fruits like lemons and tangerines are very versatile allowing you to create a number of different recipes from one ingredient.

Lemons are so important in your raw food journey; they are excellent blood purifiers, weight loss aids and they cleanse the liver. While tangerines are high in b vitamins which help to improve your mood.

BOOK 445

I got a huge bag of lemons from Cosco, I love Cosco. This bag of lemons will last me two weeks and I’ve already used them in so many recipes already.

To give you an example I make my morning drink of lemon water with them. I also spice up my nut milk cheeses with them.

So when you head out to your supermarket this Friday or whenever you go don't forget to stock up on lemons!

Now on to this specimen of a frozen raw desert, in one word it's good and I might go as far as saying it was simply delicious. So make it.

How cute would it be to make ten of these and store them in the refrigerator for guests when you have your next party. Enjoy the recipe below

Recipe

3 lemons scored into cups

4 small Tangerines juiced

1/3 cup of Maple syrup

1/2 cup of Water

The zest of one Tangerine

Mix all of the ingredients into a bowl and then freeze in an ice cream maker. If you don’t have ice-cream makers simply place the tangerine juice into a square pan and freeze until almost completely frozen.

To make the lemon cups you simply cut the bottoms and tops of your lemons and score out the middle.

To assemble place the frozen tangerine ice into the lemon cups; serve right away or store in the refrigerator.

Happy 4 of July

DSC_9437-2

The fourth of July is one of those unofficial holidays that I really don't get into. I tend to dread the illegal firework procession that sounds like I’m living in a war zone. However having a blog allows me to unofficially celebrate with you by sharing beautiful pictures and ideas.

In all my years of experience with pineapple I never knew that to get the benefits of this fruit you have to cut it away that keeps the core intact. Bromaline is an enzyme that is found in the core of the pineapple. It thins mucus, improves cardiovascular health, speeds wound healing and aids in digestion.

I prepared this fruit platter for my unofficial Fourth of July celebration, however if you are headed to a barbecue or hosting a celebration of you're own make a fruit platter. The rules in the culinary world state that the best fruit platters are to be arrayed with at least five different fruits.

Now to the giveaway the rules are simple, to be eligible you have to sign up or  have already signed up for my newsletter, my newsletter is located in the upper right hand corner of my sidebar. Then leave a comment! I am giving away a brand new copy of Matthew Kenney's Everyday Raw Express.

This photo is a special one in that it was taken for me in Jamaica !

How to make Caribbean style Coconut Milk

BOOK045-1

BOOK043-1

Coconuts are to the Caribbean as apple pie is to America; we have been surrounded by this fruit since birth.

Our mother use to cut our sodas with it so it could stretch to serve our brothers and sisters.

The coconut flesh which refers to the mature coconut has and still is made into special breads and pastries like sweet bread, cassava pone, sugar cakes, turnovers and many more confections. Also coconut is used in savory dishes like coconut rice and peas.

We never called the flesh of a young coconut meat, instead we called it jelly. Young coconuts were used exclusively for drinking and the jelly was scraped out and eaten as is.

We used the mature coconuts to make coconut milk which as added to drinks, ice creams and even rice and peas. This recipe that I’m sharing with you is the traditional way of making coconut milk. Enjoy it alone or add it to smoothies or even raw cakes.

Step 1: crack one mature coconut in half; this can be done by using a hammer and placing the coconut on a sturdy counter top and cutting board.

Step 2: Strain off the water in the coconut, you could drink it.

Step 3: Run a knife between the covering and the coconut to remove the coconut flesh.

Step 4: Grater the coconut on the finest gratering option.

Step 5: Place the fresh grated coconut into a bowl and fill with 5 cups of water. Let the mixture steep for 1 hour then strain with a nut milk bag and use it as the recipe calls for it.
